WIAM publishes its first plastics database WIAM® Plastics

WIAM stands for reliability and for decades of experience in material data management. This has so far prevented us from launching a database for plastics.

Our WIAM® METALLINFO has been an integral part of material data procurement for small and large companies for many years. The diverse and sometimes otherwise unavailable characteristic values for metals convince our customers. However, metals have the great advantage that they are standardized nationally and/or internationally. And even if the production process (e.g. forming, heat treatment) has an influence on the material parameters, you can often ignore this influence, or the process itself is standardized again (heat treatment).

This is different with plastics. The delivered semi-finished product of a plastic is usually a granulate that has little to do with the final shape of the component. The plastic only gets its properties during the manufacturing process (e.g. injection molding). And this process can be very different and have an equally large influence on the properties of the component. This means that you either include all production parameters in a database or you have to live with the uncertainty of the data.

In the first case, our customers like to use our WIAM® MaterialsHub, which can represent exactly this process dependency, but is filled with the data generated by the customers. So far we have not wanted to live with the uncertainty of the second case. But our customers have approached us so often that even an estimation of characteristic values is of great help to them.

We have now taken up this customer request and implemented it in a new product, without sacrificing our reliability. At the end of the year WIAM® Plastics will be offered. This database, which is functionally similar to the WIAM® METALLINFO, will structure plastics according to the general categorization (e.g. PPS+GF40, PA66). The characteristic values available from existing supplier data sheets are summarized for these plastic groups in mean values and value ranges. It is also stated which trade names have been combined in the individual groups. And the data currently includes a large number of physical and technical-mechanical parameters.
